Endoscopic Urtrasound (EUS) Workshop with live case demonstration took place for the 1st time in Nepal.
Kathmandu, June 13, 2016: Norvic International Hospital has conducted Endoscopic-Ultrasound (EUS) workshop with live case demonstration first ever in the medical history of Nepal.
ENDOSCOPIC ULTRASOUND (EUS) has revolutionalized the approach to lesions inside and outside the gastrointestinal tract. It has opened the door for gastroenterologists to explore organs outside of the GI lumen, such as the lymph nodes, lung, pancreas, and liver. The team at Norvic have started EUS service for the first time in Nepal about 18 months back and over 100 cases (diagnostic and interventional) using a Pentax EG-3870UTK Linear –Array Ultrasound Gastroscope have been successfully carried out so far. Likewise in India, EUS technique has been widely accepted in all major hospitals. In case of Nepal, EUS technology was unavailable until recently.
What is EUS?
For general understanding, EUS is an ultrasound, which is attached to an Endoscope. Ultrasound is a type of imaging which uses high-frequency sound waves to look at organs and structures inside the body. Endoscopy is a technique in which a flexible tube of approx. 1 m length with a light source attached to the tip is passed through the mouth to the esophagus, stomach and distal duodenum (small intestine) to visualize the lesions within it. In EUS, the attached ultrasound probe with this endoscope allows doctors to visualize organs from GI lumen along with its surrounding structures in depth which can be comparable or arguably better to CT or an MRI scan.
How are patients benefitted?
The procedure is exceptional in diagnosing spectrum of diseases including cancer staging, diagnosis of early pancreatitis and evaluation of sub mucosal masses. EUS guided Fine needle Aspiration (EUS-FNA) has added abundant benefits increasing its value from a diagnostic tool to an interventional therapeutic technique.
The workshop entitled Clinical best practices on Endoscopic Ultrasound Imaging, step ahead of Gastroentestinal Endoscopy was attended by about 20 budding physicians and gastroenterologists in Kathmandu.
Physician and Gastroenterologist from TUTH., Bir Hospital, Nepal Cancer Hospital and some from Private Hospital were participating apart from the gastroenterologists from Norvic.
The workshop was designed by Norvic's Digestive Disease Centre (DDC) and the under the aegis of head of dept., Sr. consultant physician and Gastroententerologist at Norvic, Dr. Madhu Ghimire's direction.
Dr. Yogesh Batra, Sr. Consultant & Director - Gastroenterology & Hepatology – BLK Super Specialty Hospital, Dehli was the faculty guest.
Diagnostic and Therapeutic training on EUS was done involving cases (mostly complicated ones) with pancreato-biliary origin and gladding. Out of the 7 complex cases, two were operable and one was inoperable. Patients who were not diagnosed for a long time were instantly diagnosed and further treatment planned.
Biopsies done and each case could be changed nearly one lack but everything was free of cost. No registration charge was taken from Doctor as well.
The programme was most successful. Doctors who were not familiar with the technique were given hands on training.
This kind of activities will be continued in future as well that will benefit the patients & training doctors.
