Kathmandu, March 3: CPN (UML) Chairman and Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli today insisted on the need for enhanced cooperation and consensus among the political parties for securing, strengthening and institutionalising democracy.

Speaking at the inaugural session of the Nepali Congress's 13th National Convention at the Open Theatre in the capital city, PM Oli said his party wanted to forge alliances with all the forces for development works and upholding national unity.

"The people's rights have been institutionalized and strengthened through the democratic constitution, and the people have entered a new phase of economic prosperity," PM Oli said, adding, "We must now change the past methods and ways."

Underlining the need for the political parties to focus on country's economic development and prosperity, the PM emphasized that Nepali Congress and UML, in particular, must work hand in hand while taking step forward.

On the occasion, Chairman Oli said Nepal is a country made up of the Himalayas, hills and Tarai, 127 ethnic groups, more than 123 languages, and that which embraced various sorts of trade from east to west, professions, culture and castes that need to be respected.

Speaking of the Nepali Congress's extraordinary contribution in democratic uprisings, Oli added that the party had worked harder, sweated, put in many ideas and sacrificed in bringing the Nepali society from the dark era of Rana regime to the modern world. "Congress's contribution is scaled highly in achieving democracy and transforming the people's lifestyle," he said.

"This general convention of Congress should not only be a mere formality and regular constitutional process, it should ready itself on policy level, and on practical and leadership wise," PM Oli emphasized.

PM Oli further said that the meeting of the Council of Ministers held on Wednesday conferred high accolade to 22 persons killed in democratic agitation by declaring them martyrs.
